KUMAMON

Kumamon is the PR character (mascot) of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, created when the Kyushu Shinkansen high-speed railway line opened in March 2011.
He is a lively, cheeky boy with cute mannerisms and snappy movements.
He is also a civil servant and is the head of Kumamoto Prefecture’s sales and happiness departments.
A unique system has been adopted in Japan whereby anyone can use Kumamon illustrations for free as long as they obtain approval.
Sales of Kumamon merchandise totaled ¥140.8bn in 2017.
Approval must be obtained, and a fee must be paid to use Kumamon illustrations outside Japan.
